Is the Importance of Golden Hour Overrated in Landscape Photography?

As soon as you begin your journey as a landscape photographer you will start to read and hear about the importance of taking images at golden hour. It can certainly help us capture some wonderful images, but is it the only time of day we can capture our best photographs? That’s what I discuss in my latest YouTube video which you can watch here.

How To Create Balanced Compositions + Print Giveaway

Balance is a very important part of creating a nice image - get it wrong and the image just won't feel right to the viewer. I give some tips on this in my recent video which you can watch here. Also, would you like the chance to get a free print of an image such as the one below? I'm running a giveaway of two free prints, the details of how to enter are in the video.

Recent Landscape Photography Trips

I've been on a few trips recently in various places across Scotland and I have vlogs from some of these on my YouTube channel. I always enjoy looking for unique images and I talk about that in one of my videos, I also have a couple of woodland photography videos posted. I really enjoy woodland photography and the search for interesting compositions. You can watch my latest video here and I've included a couple of images from recent videos below.

Printing is the Voice of Landscape Photography

I've created a video which gives a brief behind the scenes look at what goes into the production of my printed images, from the moment of capture until print. I feel that printing is a very important step in the process of creating images. It is extremely satisfying to see an image you have captured, processed and printed finally displayed on your wall. You can watch the video here.

Searching for Seascapes and a Sky of Fire

In recent weeks I have been at the coast hoping to capture some seascapes. In one of those trips I faced changeable conditions and ending up returning to the same location twice, you can watch that video here. In my second trip I headed out to another location in the hope of capturing some sunset images with wonderful colour in the sky.  I was fortunate enough to witness an amazing sunset with wonderful colour, that video is available here.

Waiting For a Stunning Sunset

Sunsets at the coast can be so rewarding and so challenging too. The tide is always changing and that makes our compositions change too, then we need to factor in the changing light. The coast is definitely one of my favourite places for landscape photography and I love the challenges it brings. In my most recent vlog I headed out on a beautiful night to try and capture an amazing sunset. You can watch the video here.

Woodland Photography and Climbing High in the Cairngorms to Capture Light

My recent landscape photography trips have seen me venture to a woodland and also climb high up in the Cairngorms in Scotland. In my woodland photography vlog I capture some of the finer details of the woodland and a particular scene which I found quite interesting, you can watch that video here. On my trip to the Cairngorms I set off late in the afternoon to climb high up in an attempt to capture the nice evening light as it hit the Cairngorm mountains and surrounding hills and lochs. Watch how I get on and see the images I capture here.

Changing Weather and Nervous Waits

The weather can change significantly in a matter of minutes. I decided to visit the Aberdeenshire coastline one evening as it had been a beautiful day. Not long after I headed out to do some landscape photography the weather changed and the clouds rolled in! I found a couple of scenes I really liked but had a nervous evening waiting to see if the sun would come out from behind the clouds. You can watch what happened here.

Racing Against the Sunset

On my recent travels around North Scotland I spotted a wonderful expanse of water late one evening.  The scenery was beautiful but I wanted to find and compose an image which captured the feel of the location and evening. Although I had some time until sunset the sun was moving quite quickly to hide behind a mountain, when that happened the opportunity to capture an image would be gone.  Watch how I get on racing against the sunset here.

The Highlands of Scotland

I just returned from enjoying a few days landscape photography in the Highlands of Scotland. I was fortunate to be met with some beautiful weather and stunning scenery including snow covered mountains. An important part of landscape photography is enjoying the scenery while on location as much as enjoying the end result in terms of the images you capture. I felt lucky to do both. Some of my trip is available to see here.

Landscape Photography in Tough Conditions

Tough weather conditions can make landscape photography difficult. I recently ventured out in strong winds to capture some coastal images on a stormy day. As long as you can make sure you are safe, and that your camera equipment is sufficiently protected, tough conditions offer great photographic opportunities. You can see how I got on via my YouTube video here.

Taking Good Images in Dull Weather

It is still possible to take really nice images on a dull day. In overcast conditions I head to the woods and search for compositions which appeal to my eye. The sun appears once and only very briefly but I leave with some nice images which I am happy with. We can’t always be out at sunrise and sunset but you can still capture great images at other times of the day and in less than ideal weather conditions. Watch my journey here.

Telling the Story of a Location

I recently visited a coastal location hoping to capture three images which I felt worked well together and told the story of the area. After exploring the area and working on some compositions I captured three images which I felt achieved my goal. This can be a rewarding exercise, not only can you get a set of images which look good together on your wall but it is also a great way to improve your landscape photography. You can watch my day here.
